We Give Books - this is a terrific site that has marvelous picture books for students and each time a student reads a book, he/she can donate a book to child who doesn't have books.  Before reading, select a charity to read for and then choose the book to be read.  For each book read online the Pearson Foundation will donate a book to the selected charity.  It's win, win!

Project Gutenberg - this site has over 36,000 ebooks available for download.  Each of the books the books is free because their copyright has expired in the U.S.  It's a great place to find the classics.

Bookflix - be sure to ask your teacher or the Media Center staff for the password.  We have them available on bookmarks for all students.

PebbleGo - geat for primary grades.  Pairs fiction with nonfiction titles.  Be sure to ask your teacher or the Media Center staff for the password.  We have them available on bookmarks for all students.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school fully prepared for college and careers.  The standards are:

• Aligned with college and work expectations;
• Clear, understandable and consistent;
• Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
• Built upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
• Informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and
• Evidence- and research-based.

COMMON CORE AND LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAMS

The Common Core Standards bring a number of changes that will impact library media programs, for example:

• Students will be expected to read at a significantly higher level by the time they graduate.
• There will be a greater emphasis on reading nonfiction--even in language arts.
• More usage of primary sources to teach history.
• Greater emphasis on problem-solving and higher order thinking, exactly the kind of instruction Media Specialists promote.

Holiday Program to Begin December 16th

Annually the Media Center staff presents a holiday gift to Russell students and staff with the reading of an exceptional book.  Mr. Swift works with us and creates a memorable setting for our story.  Students come to the Media Center by class, enjoy the lovely setting, music, and decorations, then pause to listen to the story and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate.  Families are welcome to come in during this time and enjoy the season with us.

This year we are featuring The Carpenter's Gift written by David Rubel and illustrated by noted artist Jim LaMarche.  Mr. Rubel is an author, historian, and lecturer and has written this book in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity.

 

Reviewers have said:  "Family, friendship, and the spirit of giving are at the heart of this inspiring picture book."  We believe all who experience it will agree.

We The People Bookshelf

ALA/NEH We the People Bookshelf

During the summer we added several new books and DVDs to the Media Center collection courtesy of We the People Bookshelf. The We the People Bookshelf is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association and provides selected schools with classic books about America's heritage.  The collection of books received from the Bookshelf seeks to promote the idea of the United States as a "union," especially since this year we will observe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Target has again awarded Russell a $500.00 grant to purchase books. THANK YOU, TARGET!  The books will be purchased from First Book, a national literacy program.  As a Title I school, Russell qualifies to participate with First Book and purchase high-quality fiction and nonfiction books for the Media Center collection.

Internet Safety,Cyberbullying, and Bullying Resources

 
Throughout the school year we talk with students in the Media Center about the importance of developing safe habits when using the internet.  We suggest that students follow all their family's rules about internet safety and hope they include:

1.  Always getting permission from a parent or other responsible adult before using the internet.

2.  Not giving personal information out on the internet, including name, address, telephone number, or school name.

3.  Never agreeing to meet anyone they have met online.

Parents should know that social internet sites pose potential dangers for young children without the maturity to understand the implications of their participation.

We also talk with students in the 4th and 5th grades about cyberbullying.   We hope all parents will talk with their children about these subjects and establish guidelines that will ensure they are responsible users of the internet.  For added information, please come see the resources in the Media Center.

                                                                         

The White House is concerned about bullying too and on March 10th sponsored a summit on bullying prevention.  Watch the proceedings and check out their new website at: http://www.stopbullying.gov/kids/index.html.  There are also great videos and resources for kids at this website: http://takeastand.stopbullying.gov/kids/.  Let's stop bullying!          

Book Damages

The number of damaged books returned to the Media Center is increasing.  Please understand that when students check out books from the Media Center they are obligated to take care of them and return them on the date due.

Students are expected to return books in the same condition in which they were checked out.  Students who return damaged books and book covers will be assessed fines according to Cobb County guidelines which are as follows:

 Students must pay the full cost of replacement of books deemed unusable.  Damages rendering a book unusable include but are not limited to torn out pages, broken spine, obscene writing or drawing.  For books that receive major damages, the student must pay 50% of the replacement cost of the book.  Major damages include but are not limited to a broken cover, water damage, and excessive marking.  For books that receive minor damages, students must pay 25% of the replacement cost.  Minor damages include but are not limited to pen and pencil markings, multiple folded pages, multiple torn pages.

Russell's Media Center CREW

Russell's CREW provides a valuable service in the Media Center.  They have assigned shelves in the Media Center to maintain along with the computer area.  Working as a team they ensure assignments are completed each day and they serve as role models for all students using the Media Center.  Crew members are scheduled to work in the Media Center before and after school.
